Starting from Exchange 2007, indexing has become a requirement, since both the Outlook Web App (OWA) and Outlook (online) searches use the index.
The index in Exchange is created using a customised version of Microsoft Search called “Microsoft Search (Exchange)”. This engine relies on the filter packs to “filter” the content of Microsoft Office documents and pass them back to the Microsoft Search (Exchange).
The latest version (to date) of the Filter Pack is version 2.0. This pack can be installed on Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010 and includes support for the following file formats:
- Legacy Office Filter (97-2003; .doc, .ppt, .xls)
- Metro Office Filter (2007 and 2010; .docx, .pptx, .xlsx)
- Zip Filter
- OneNote filter
- Visio Filter
- Publisher Filter
- Open Document Format Filter
You can download Microsoft Office 2010 Filter Packs from the Microsoft website here.
There is however one very common file format missing from this list. That file format is Adobe’s PDF. In order to scan and index PDF’s, Adobe have created the Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms. Again, this filer pack is supported on Exchange 2007 and Exchange 2010.
